Katarti Beach is a small, quiet beach in southern Crete. It is not one of the island’s best-known beaches, and that is what makes it special.
It is situated at Cape Oxa, south-west of the summit of Kofina at the mouth of the gorge. It is a secluded beach with rugged scenery, striking high cliffs, pebbles and deep blue waters. It can be reached via a dirt track from Kapetaniana or via a rugged 2.5 km path, which takes about an hour, from Trypiti beach. The large caves flanking the beach provide shade for sunbathers.

Katarti Beach is unorganised. This means that:
- there are usually no parasols or sun loungers
- there is no lifeguard
- there are no beachside shops.
It’s a good idea to bring with you:
- water and something to eat
- a hat and sun cream
- if possible, your own parasol for shade.
The sea and the weather
The sea at Katarti Beach is usually calm on fine days, with beautiful colours ranging from light blue to deep blue.

- when the wind blows strongly, especially a southerly or westerly wind, there may be waves
- the water gets deep relatively quickly in some places.
Why it’s worth a visit
Katarti Beach isn’t ‘spectacular’ in the sense of the big, famous beaches, but it has its own beauty:
- it’s quiet
- it has clear waters
- it’s set in a natural, unspoilt landscape.
- prefer quieter, lesser-known beaches
- want to relax without music or crowds
- enjoy feeling closer to nature.
A few tips for your visit
- Plan to go early in the day, especially in summer, as the sun in southern Crete is strong.
- Take bin bags with you for your rubbish. Whatever you bring, take it back with you when you leave.
- Check the weather before you go. If it’s very windy, the experience may not be quite as enjoyable.
- Wear suitable footwear, as access is via a dirt track.
