The Beach
Psili Ammos is a stunning sandy beach that fully lives up to its name. Both the shore and the seabed are covered in fine-grained, golden sand, offering a unique experience for swimming and relaxation. The beach’s crystal-clear waters and sandy shore make it ideal for families with children.
Facilities
The beach is partially organised and offers:
- Parasols and sun loungers
- A kiosk selling snacks and refreshments
- Natural shade from tamarisk trees (note: the best spots under the trees are often occupied by permanent campers)
Historical and Religious Significance
One of the most fascinating features of the area is the islet of Mikronisi, which is visible from the beach. The locals call it ‘Apostle Paul’, as according to tradition, the Apostle Paul stopped here during his journey to Rome, as mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles. Today, the islet is home to oil storage tanks belonging to the Vardinoyannis family.
Population and Atmosphere
Psili Ammos is the most popular beach in the area, particularly at weekends when it attracts many visitors from both Crete and further afield. Despite the increased number of visitors, the beach retains the friendly and relaxed atmosphere that characterises the island’s southern coast.
Neighbouring Beaches
The Kala Limania area offers plenty of options for beach hopping. To the east of Psili Ammos you’ll find:
- Kala Limania Beach – next to the picturesque little harbour
- Makria Ammos – ideal for those seeking a quieter spot
