Sternes, Heraklion

County Ηρακλείου
3 λεπτά ανάγνωσης
The village of Sternes in Heraklion is a small but historically and culturally significant settlement on Crete, situated in the prefecture of Heraklion. Although it is not one of the well-known tourist destinations, Sternes retains an authentic rural character and is a typical example of a Cretan village with deep roots in tradition and local history.

Sternes is situated in a semi-mountainous area of the prefecture of Heraklion, a short distance from larger villages and main roads linking the hinterland with the city of Heraklion. The natural environment is characterised by olive groves, farmland and low hills, features that make up the typical landscape of central Crete.

The area enjoys a mild Mediterranean climate, with warm summers and mild winters, favourable for agriculture and permanent residence.

The name ‘Sternes’ most likely derives from the ‘sternes’, that is, the rainwater collection cisterns, which were essential for the survival of the inhabitants in earlier times. The existence of such infrastructure bears witness to a long-standing human presence and an organised community.

The area has been inhabited since Byzantine times, whilst during the Venetian and Ottoman periods, Sternes was an agricultural settlement, centred on farming and livestock rearing. Under Ottoman rule, as in many Cretan villages, the inhabitants took part in revolutionary movements and strongly preserved their Greek and Orthodox identity.

The local economy of the Sternon community is traditionally based on:

  • olive cultivation and olive oil production,
  • livestock farming,
  • and small-scale agricultural activities.

Although the population has declined in recent decades due to urbanisation, the village remains vibrant, with residents who continue to work the land and maintain their traditional way of life.

The village church plays a central role in the community’s social life; it serves as a focal point for the residents and is dedicated to the Presentation of the Virgin Mary. The religious festivals and celebrations on 21 November bring together both permanent residents and Sternians living abroad who return to the village during this time.

The customs and traditions of the Cretan countryside, such as traditional music, dancing and hospitality, remain alive, passed down from generation to generation.

Sternes retains elements of traditional Cretan architecture, with stone houses, small courtyards and narrow alleyways. Despite modern developments, the village has not changed significantly, retaining a peaceful and authentic character.

Today, the community of Sternes faces the challenges of the modern era, such as an ageing population and a decline in residents, but at the same time is striving to preserve its identity. Its proximity to larger urban centres offers opportunities for sustainable development and an improved quality of life.

The community of Sternes in Heraklion is a small but authentic heart of the Cretan countryside. With a history stretching back centuries, a close connection to the land and a rich cultural heritage, Sternes keeps the spirit of the Cretan countryside alive and offers a genuine glimpse of life beyond Crete’s tourist trails.
