Kapetaniana is a small, picturesque village nestled in the heart of the Asterousia Mountains in southern Crete, approximately 71 kilometres from Heraklion, at an altitude of 800 metres. It is situated on a natural ‘balcony’ with sweeping views of the Libyan Sea and the sacred peak of Kofinas, where the horizon meets the sea and the rocky massif of the Asterousia Mountains.

History
The area has a long history, as archaeological finds bear witness to a continuous human presence in the region from Minoan times to the present day. Indeed, the so-called ‘Eteocretans’, the original Cretans, took refuge there following the Dorian invasion. In Christian times, the area became an important centre of spirituality, with the Monastery of Vathmos gradually giving way to ‘Panagia tou Kyriou Eleison’, around which the settlement developed. The village was deserted in 1744 following outbreaks of the plague and the harsh conditions of Ottoman rule, but life returned later when inhabitants of Asfendos in Sfakia migrated there and founded ‘Mikra Sfakia’, which was renamed ‘Kapetaniana’ due to the active role its inhabitants played in the revolts of the 19th century.
Today
The village is a favourite destination for climbing enthusiasts, whilst a dirt track starts from there leading to the summit of Kofinas, a short route offering breathtaking views. Every April, a marathon is held nearby in honour of the Virgin Mary of the Koudouma Monastery. Kapetaniana is also home to the traditional eco-tourism complex ‘Thalori’, comprising 20 traditional houses that have been renovated with respect for Cretan architecture, preserving their fortress-like and monastic features.
