Trypiti Beach – Where the gorge meets the sea
Trypiti Beach is situated in southern Crete and is one of those places that combines mountains and the sea in a truly striking way. On one side rise the cliffs and the Trypiti Gorge, whilst on the other stretches the Libyan Sea with its deep blue waters.

It is not a typical, bustling beach. On the contrary, it is more secluded and peaceful, making it ideal for those who want to experience the ‘wild’ side of southern Crete.
What is the beach

like? Trypiti Beach is relatively small, with:
  • pebbles or coarse sand, depending on the season and the waves
  • clear, deep waters
  • rocks all around, creating a natural ‘frame’ for the landscape.
Behind you, you can see the mouth of the Trypiti Gorge, from where hikers make their way down. Ahead of you lies the sea, usually calm when the wind isn’t blowing strongly, with its characteristic deep blue colour.

The view is very ‘uncluttered’: rock, sea, a little low vegetation. There aren’t many buildings or structures to spoil the natural landscape.

 Tranquillity and seclusion

Trypiti Beach does not usually attract large crowds.
Due to the way it’s reached (either through a gorge or along a difficult road or footpath, depending on the spot), it isn’t the sort of beach that gets packed with parasols and loud music.

It’s ideal for:
  • those seeking peace and relaxation
  • those who prefer more ‘wild’ and natural beaches
  •  travellers who like to feel they’re in a place that’s a bit more special and not so touristy.
There, the only sounds are the waves, the breeze and, at certain times, absolute silence.

Access to the beach

Trypiti Beach can be reached:
  •  through the Trypiti Gorge, for those going on a hike
  •  or via a dirt track or footpath, depending on where you start and the condition of the route.
In any case, this is not your typical beach ‘right next to the main road’.
It requires a bit of research, good information and proper preparation, especially if you’re not very familiar with the area.

That’s why it’s always a good idea to:
  • ask locals for the best route
  • check the road conditions and the weather
  • not to rely solely on a random map on your mobile.
What you’ll find – and what you won’t
At Trypiti Beach, as with many secluded beaches in southern Crete:
  •  there are no organised facilities (parasols, sun loungers, lifeguard)
  • there isn’t always a shop or kiosk right on the beach
  •  there is no shade, except perhaps under some rocks depending on the time of day.

So, before you go, make sure you take the following with you:
  • plenty of water
  • something to eat (a snack or a light meal)
  • a hat, sun cream, and perhaps your own small parasol
  • a bin bag for your rubbish, so you don’t leave anything behind.

 The sea and the weather
The waters off Trypiti beach are usually very clear, with beautiful colours.
However, as is the case throughout southern Crete:
  • when southerly or westerly winds blow, there may be waves
  • in some places the water deepens rapidly.
Caution is advised, especially if:
  • you are not experienced swimmers
  • you have children with you
  • the weather is changeable or it is very windy.
It’s always a
good idea to check the forecast and avoid the sea when the wind is very strong.

Who is Trypiti

Beach suitable for? Trypiti Beach is ideal for:
  •  those who love nature and the ‘wilder’ side of Crete
  • people who aren’t put off by the lack of amenities
  • those who want to combine hiking (through the gorge) with a day at the beach
  •  travellers who prefer quiet, more ‘hidden’ beaches.
It is
not particularly suitable for:
  • families with very young children
  • those who want easy access, sun loungers, a café and fully organised facilities
  • people who do not feel comfortable in more secluded spots.
Trypiti
Beach is a quintessential example of southern Crete:
  • it combines mountains, a gorge and the sea
  • it boasts a wild, unspoilt landscape
  • it is not ‘over-touristed’
  • it offers tranquillity and simplicity.
If you find yourself in southern Crete and love the more natural, peaceful beaches, Trypiti is definitely worth a spot on your itinerary, or at least on your list of places you’d like to visit at some point.
It’s one of those places that stays with you, not because it’s famous, but because it gives you the feeling that, for a little while, you’ve truly been far away from the rest of the world.
