Agiofarago Beach is situated in the south of the prefecture of Heraklion, approximately 80 kilometres from the city of Heraklion. It can be reached either on foot through the impressive gorge (a 20–30-minute walk of moderate difficulty from the car park), which you can reach by road via the route from Pombia – Pigaidakia–Kalo Limenes route, or by caique from Matala, Agia Galini or Kalo Limenes.
The beach is small, secluded and unspoilt, with fine pebbles and coarse sand, crystal-clear waters – usually calm – ideal for swimming and exploring the underwater landscape. It is not a developed beach (you won’t find parasols, beach bars or lifeguards), so it is advisable to bring everything you need with you (water, food, shade). The beach offers shade only at the base of the rocks or inside the gorge

The scenery is rugged and striking, with imposing vertical cliffs that ‘hug’ the beach, large hermit caves, a small church (St Anthony’s, with a spring) on the way to the sea, and natural arches at the western end of the coast. Opposite, you can make out the small islet of Papadoplaka. In the wider area and within the gorge, you will often come across wild goats roaming freely.
The route to Agiofarago, once you reach the historic Monastery of Odigitria, follows a dirt track (4–5 km – drive with care) to the car park. From there, the walk through the gorge begins.
