The Holy Monastery of Odigitria is situated in the south of the prefecture of Heraklion, in the Asterousia Mountains. It is built in a fortified position, at an altitude of approximately 250 metres, between the villages of Sivas and Listaros and near Kaloi Limenes, in a barren and imposing setting dotted with Byzantine monuments and caves.
The monastery was founded in the 14th century and is linked to the Byzantine Kallergis family. It is considered one of the oldest monasteries in Crete and is mentioned as early as 1393 in historical documents. It has made an enormous spiritual, artistic and national contribution – it served as a refuge for rebels (haïnes), particularly during the Ottoman occupation.
Of particular significance is the figure of the legendary Xopateras (whose secular name was Ioannis Markakis), who single-handedly fought even an entire Ottoman garrison, writing one of the most dramatic chapters in Cretan history. The monastery has always been a centre of Christian and hagiographic tradition.

Architecture
The monastery is of the fortress type, with an impressive fortified tower (the Xopateras) to protect the monks from raids. The main church (catholicon) is a double-aisled structure, dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin Mary and the Holy Apostles.
Its distinctive features include:
- The old battlements
- The door with the ‘killer’ (‘katachytra’), from which the monks would pour boiling oil or molten lead during sieges
- Numerous frescoes and portable icons (including some works by Angelos from the mid-15th century)
- Magnificent vestments and ecclesiastical artefacts.
