Agios Ioannis Asterousion is situated approximately 75–80 kilometres south of Heraklion. It is reached via a mountainous route that crosses the Asterousia Mountains, offering spectacular views of gorges, bare rocks and the vast Libyan Sea. Although the road is narrow and winding, the journey itself is an integral part of the visit.
The area’s seclusion helps to preserve its natural beauty and the tranquillity that characterises it.
Agios Ioannis beach stretches along a peaceful cove, with large pebbles and fine gravel, whilst in some places there is also sand. The waters are crystal-clear, deep and pristine, characterised by the vivid blue colour of the Libyan Sea.
The landscape is framed by steep rocky outcrops and low, wild vegetation. The absence of major human intervention enhances the sense of freedom and seclusion, making the beach ideal for those seeking tranquillity and a connection with nature.
Next to the beach lies the small settlement of Agios Ioannis, with a few houses, guesthouses and tavernas. The pace of life is slow and authentic, with the locals maintaining the traditional Cretan hospitality.
The settlement takes its name from the Church of Agios Ioannis, which is a landmark for the area and is linked to the spiritual history of the people of Asterousia, known for their ascetic tradition.
The wider area of the Asterousia Mountains has a long history of asceticism and monasticism. Caves and hermitages around Agios Ioannis bear witness to the presence of monks and ascetics since Byzantine times.
The Holy Monastery of Koudoumas is also situated a short distance from the beach, lending the area a strong spiritual character. Many visitors combine their pilgrimage with a visit to the beach, experiencing a unique blend of spirituality and natural beauty.
