Route and Hiking
Length & Difficulty Rating
-
The total length of the walking route is approximately 3 to 4 kilometres, with a total elevation gain of around 350 metres from the starting point to the exit at the sea.
-
The duration of the hike usually ranges from 3 to 4 hours, depending on the visitor’s pace and the number of stops.
-
The walk is not particularly technical, but some sections can be more challenging, especially after rain or on slippery sections.
Starting Points
✔ The usual starting point is just outside the village of Exo Mouliana, near the old stone arched bridge at Lachanas, which dates from the 19th century and is an important landmark along the route.
✔ You can either set off from there, or take a short path downhill and start closer to the river to save time.
Water Cycle, Nature & Environment
The gorge stands out because:
It retains water all year round, even in summer, which is rare for many other gorges in Crete. The water comes from springs and streams flowing down from the Ornos mountain range and collects in the gorge’s bed.
The route passes through lush vegetation featuring plane trees, oleanders, wild herbs, fresh shrubs and other plant species, whilst in some places one can spot butterflies, small reptiles, birds and other small animals.
Along the way, there are old watermills and the remains of bridges, bearing witness to the area’s connection with traditional agriculture and the way of life of the inhabitants in times gone by.
The most fascinating feature is the Richtis Waterfall, situated roughly halfway along the route and flanked by a small pond where many visitors stop to rest, to enjoy the cool air and – depending on the weather – to take a dip.
The presence of still water and the waterfall make the route ideal, particularly in spring and autumn, when the flow is at its highest and nature is at its most beautiful.
Richti Beach
The walk ends at Richti Beach, a beautiful beach with pebbles and sand, natural shade and clear waters. The beach is ideal for relaxing after the walk and for a refreshing dip.
