Elafonisi stands out for its rare natural beauty. The sand has a pink hue due to the thousands of broken shells mixed in with the white sand. The shallow, warm waters create natural lagoons that are ideal for families with children.
The area is home to rare endemic plants such as sand lilies and sea cedars. This is where loggerhead turtles nest and migratory birds rest. For this reason, the area is a protected site and visitors must respect the environment.

The name ‘Elafonisi’ has nothing to do with deer. One theory suggests that it derives from the word ‘lafura’ (booty), as pirates used to hide their treasures here.
The area has an ancient Greek history, with references to ancient temples. However, it was marked by a tragic event in 1824, when hundreds of Christians were massacred here by the Turks. A memorial near the car park commemorates this historical tragedy.
